The AVENTON PACE 500.3 is the ultimate cruiser bike. AVENTON set out to make the best possible bike for cruising around on bike paths or city streets and did a great job of it. The PACE 500.3 has lots of power, torque sensing, a comfortable relaxed riding position, upgraded components, and a color LCD display. It is available in regular or step-thru frames.
The PACE 500.3 looks like a traditional hybrid bike with a cruiser handlebar and cockpit setup. It has a battery hidden in the downtube. The battery is removable for charging, and storage or for swapping. The overall look is very clean.
It has a 500 watt rear hub motor giving it plenty of power for city riding. The torque sensor means you get almost instant power when you push the pedals. The bike has hydraulic disc brakes for nice stopping power. The driveline has 8 speeds to help with any hill climbing or for more speed on the flats.

The bike has a BaFang 750 watt rear hub motor that gives it plenty of power. It can handle most hills on throttle only. It has a weight capacity of 330 lbs. The 8 speed Shimano Acera pedal driveline give you enough gearing to make pedaling up hills a breeze. It has no trouble hitting its 28mph top speed fully loaded on flat ground.
The Cafe Cruiser has a longer wheelbase giving it the cruiser look. This means it needs a little more room for turning and u-turns.

A 7 speed Shimano pedal driveline is used to handle pedalling duties.
The bike has an oversized comfort seat to go with its upright riding position. The swept back bars give the bike a longer look while still giving it a very comfortable upright ride. The step thru frame makes it easier for shorter riders to get on. The frame top tube goes a bit higher at the rear than other step thru frames. It requires a bit higher step to get into the bike than other step-thru frames.
The Oasis comes with fenders, lights, and a rear rack. There are available front racks, baskets, and other accessories making this bike easy to customize.

The Specialized Turbo Como is a relaxed, fun to ride ebike. Specialized has been my personal go to brand for bikes since I got my first mountain bike as a teenager. They just make good feeling high performance bikes. The Turbo Como is expensive but it offers advanced features such as a mid-drive motor and available belt drive and internal gear box.
The Turbo Como is a step thru frame bike that comes in a variety of color patterns and sizes. You can get it at 3 different price points with different component setups and batteries. All of them have a mid-drive motor, hydraulic brakes, suspension fork, suspension seat post, lights, fenders, and a rear rack. From there you can have 9 speed, 11 speed, or an internal gearbox driveline. The Turbo Como 5.0 comes with a 710 watt battery that can give over 90 miles range on a charge.
The Turbo Como is a very smooth feeling ebike. The mid-drive motor combined with torque sensor gives it a very natural feel. You can almost forget you are riding an ebike except that it is making everything easier and more fun. Mid-drives allow you to use the pedal driveline with the motor making hills and higher speed riding easy. The only downside to this system is that it has no throttle for times when you don’t want to pedal.
What we liked:

The Model S has very high quality construction with clean looking welds and attention to detail throughout the bike. Riding the bike is no different. It is comfortable with a big cushy seat and swept back bars. It feels tight on the road with lots of available power from the 750 watt motor that can output up to 1250 watts.

The Wired Cruiser takes a higher powered, faster approach to a cruiser ebike. They didn’t follow the Class 1, 2, 3 system and decided to give riders what they want. An ebike that can go fast and long distances. They threw in a 1500 watt motor with steel reinforced gears and a 60 volt 20 ah battery. This gives you top speeds well above 30mph and a real world range of 50 to 60 miles.
This bike has a step thru frame available in 4 different colors. It comes with hydraulic brakes for stopping. The BMX handlebar gives it a good upright position that makes riding comfortable while zooming around.
This bike is more focused on the electric driveline and not pedal performance. It only has a basic 7 speed Shimano driveline with a cadence sensor that will spin out before you get anywhere close to the bikes top speed. Throttle or ghost pedaling will let you take full advantage of all that power.

The Himiway Cruiser is a powerful electric fat bike with a 350 lb weight capacity. It has a huge 17.5 ah battery and 750 watt Bafang rear hub motor giving it lots of power for heavier riders. When the motor kicks in it means business. The Cruiser is setup with more relaxed geometry and an upright seating position making it comfortable and fun to cruise around on.
The bike uses a Shimano Altus derailleur with 7 speed Shimano Tourney shifter. The bike almost has enough gear range with 7 speeds to handle the bikes full speed range without spinning out the pedals. A twist throttle is used for no pedal mode.
4.0 inch wide Kenda Juggernaut tires are used giving you a lot of traction and stability. Larger riders won’t have any problems balancing on the extra wide tires. Ride can be fine tuned for pavement or offroad by adjusting the air pressure. If you want to cruise on the beach drop it down to just a few psi. A front suspension fork is included to give you some extra cushion.

It activates with just a small amount of pedal movement. It has a 750 watt hub motor whereas most other commuter bikes come with 500 watt motors.

The Charge Comfort 2 is a lightweight and simple ebike with enough power to make riding easy. It has a 250 watt motor and 36 volt battery. It has a folding handlebar and pedals so it takes up very little space against the wall for storage. This is one of the easier ebikes out there for storage and for loading onto racks or walking up stairs.
The 250 watt motor is enough power to go 20mph on flat terrain with an adult rider. It will need some pedal help going up steep hills. The bike has no suspension. Step-thru frames are more flexible and have some natural give to them compared to a step over frame. The seat is okay for riding around but not as cushy as the oversize seat other cruiser ebikes include. It all works well for riding around on paved roads and paths at speeds this bike can go.
The bike includes fenders, lights, and a rear rack. The battery mounts into the rear rack instead of the frame. This gives the frame a lower profile look. It also allows for a lighter weight frame.
If you want a relaxed ebike for running around and don’t care about going high speeds this is a good option.

The Mokwheel Scoria is a very versatile bike that is good for cruising around or exploring offroad. If you want to cruise around in an area with lots of hills, this is a great choice.

Cruiser ebikes are bikes just for riding around. They don’t have any real purpose other than pure enjoyment. They can take a lot of different shapes and styles. Almost any ebike can be used for cruising. Most electric bikes designed as “cruiser ebikes” tend to have a retro beach cruiser look to them. This means swept back handlebars and a low slung longer look. They can be step-thru or step-over frames. There is a wide range of cruiser ebikes from the light weight and nimble Aventon Pace 500.3 to the heavy duty and very fast Wired Cruiser.
Power
Cruiser bikes can vary from lightweight 250 watt bikes to heavier 750 watt or more bikes. You should consider where you live and what terrain you will want and need to ride. A 250 watt hub motor powered bike can propel an adult at 20mph on flat land just fine. It won’t provide much help for climbing steep hills.
If you plan to ride mostly on flat roads and paths you can get a lighter weight bike with a smaller 250-350 watt motor such as the Charge Comfort 2 Electric Bike. If you live somewhere with lots of hills I would go for at least 500 watts or more. If you want to ride at higher speeds above 20mph then look for a bike with more power. The Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser has 750 watt motor and can easily go 28mph.
Range
How far do you need to go with your e-bike? E-Bike range can vary from 25 miles to well over 100 miles. Longer range means bigger batteries. Bigger batteries mean the bike will cost more and weigh more. Batteries will have some loss of range over time so it is always best to buy something that can go farther than you need it to.
Range of e-bikes varies a lot based on rider weight, how many hills you have to climb, and how fast you go. If you are a heavy rider who likes to ride fast then consider bikes with a larger battery. If you are a lighter rider, who rides in a flat area, you can get buy with a small battery.
Motor
There are 2 drive types that are common on electric cruiser bikes. Mid-drives where the motor is located at the crank such as the Specialized Turbo Como. Hub motors where the motor is inside the rear wheel such as the Aventon Pace 500.3. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.
Hub motors are more simple and easier to maintain. They do not power the bike through the pedal driveline so they don’t cause it to wear as fast. They directly drive the wheel so they cannot take advantage of the pedal driveline gear reduction. This limits their hill climbing ability.
Mid-Drive motors power the bike through the pedal driveline. They can be better at hill climbing since you can gear down into granny gear and multiply the motor torque. You can go faster as well because you can take advantage of the high gears on your bike.
Mid-drive motors can put out a lot of torque. More than the average biker. This means that they can wear out and brake parts of your pedal driveline much faster. You will have to replace chains, cassettes, and chain rings much more often than with a hub motor. Mid-drive motors tend to be lower watts. A 250 watt mid-drive motor can climb hills as well as a 750 watt hub motor.
Mid-Drive powered bikes cost more. The cheapest mid-drive bikes tend to start around $2500. The cheapest good electric cruiser bikes with hub motors start around $1000.
Torque Sensor or Cadence Sensor
One of the biggest differences in electric bikes is the pedal assist sensor. Most bikes have either a cadence sensor or torque sensor. Some bikes will have a torque sensor and a cadence sensor such as the Specialized Turbo Como. The Electric Bike Company Model S and their other bikes can be ordered with a cadence or torque sensor to suit your wants.
Torque sensors sense you pushing on the pedal to activate the motor. They will give you assistance that is proportional to how hard you push the pedals. This gives you lots of control and allows you to have just a little motor power or a lot of motor power. As you go faster and run out of pedal range you will run into a point where it’s difficult to push the pedals at the speed you are pedaling. You won’t get as much assistance. It feels like you’re not getting much assist above 20mph which is the downside to torque sensors. It feels like you need to do a lot more work to go faster.
Cadence sensors just sense that you are turning the pedals and the motor turns on. It doesn’t care how hard you are pedaling. Cadence sensor bikes tend to run at fixed speeds for each pedal assist level. At higher pedal assist levels you can go well over 20mph while ghost pedaling or spinning the pedals slowly without putting in any force.
If you want a Class 3 ebike that will easily go 28mph in pedal assist without putting in much effort, a cadence sensor is a better choice. The downside to cadence sensors is that the bike wants to go a fixed speed based on the level you have set. On many bikes, the lowest level is 10mph. When the motor kicks on it wants to go 10mph at full power and lurches forward. This makes it hard to ride in tight spaces or with a lot of pedestrians.
Battery
Battery size range for electric cruiser bikes runs from 10 ah to 20 ah. Most batteries are 48 volt although there are some 36 volt and 60 volt batteries such as the Wired Cruiser. Range is proportional to battery size. If you want to go farther, get a bigger battery. Bigger sized battery cells have less voltage sag under load so they will perform better on steep climbs.
Brakes
Cruiser bikes can come with either u-brakes or disc brakes. Disc brakes have much better stopping power. I would spend at least enough to get a disc brake equipped bike. Every bike we are recommending here has disc brakes.
Disc brakes can be either cable pull or hydraulic. Cable pull brakes are more simple and need less maintenance. Hydraulic disc brakes have much better stopping with less hand effort. In my opinion, the extra stopping power of hydraulic brakes is more than worth any extra work involved.
Pedal Driveline
As you go up in price you get better hardware for the pedal driveline. More speeds mean more pedal range which means you have more climbing power and higher gears for going faster. 7 speed drivelines run out of range above 20mph. 9 speed drivelines give you higher gears for going faster. For hills and faster riding, more gears are better. 11 Speed such as the Specialized Turbo Como 5.0 has gives you even more pedalling range.
Suspension
Cruiser ebikes are about evenly split on having suspension and not having suspension. Rigid forks weigh less and need less maintenance. Suspension forks give a smoother ride. Most cruiser bikes are designed for riding on pavement and not going offroad where suspension is more needed.
Very few cruiser bikes designed for riding on pavement have rear suspension. It adds a lot of cost and complexity to the bike. It isn’t needed for paved riding or even dirt road or gravel road riding. If you want a softer ride, you can always add a suspension seat post to your bike to give you a bit more cushion.
E-Bike Classes
The 3 classes of ebikes are:
- Class 1 – 750 watts power, pedal assist only, 20mph top speed
- Class2 – 750 watts power, throttle control, with 20mph top speed
- Class3 – 750 watts power, pedal assist only, 28mph top speed
A lot of places only allow Class 1 or 2 ebikes on bike paths. There are a lot of e-bikes out there that either aren’t classified or can be changed into different classes. An Aventon Pave 500.3 can be a class 1, 2 or 3 e-bike by removing the throttle or adjusting the top pedal assist speed. It is stickered as a Class 2 e-bike from the factory.
